It is a total creation of words and colour by this native artist who expressed his cultural and ethnic background on canvas. Arthur Shilling was born on the Rama Reserve near Orillia. Ontario. He passed away this spring from a heart condition. He was mainly self taught and is recognized for his unique, expressive style. He had many solo exhibitions across Canada and is represented in many collections, including the McMichael Gallery, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the National Museum of Man. The National Film Board has just completed a documentary on his life. The twenty-one reproductions are excellent in that the publishers were able to capture the vibrant and intense colour used by the artist. The presentation is quite unique, each painting being accompanied by some poetic or written statement by Shilling. The foreword is by Jean Chretien and complements this handsome text.
