A thoroughly readable account of Agnes Cameron's 1908 journey from Winnipeg to the mouth of the Mackenzie River and the Beaufort Sea, accompanied by her niece. At a time of tremendous interest in western and northern Canada, the journey of these two women captured a wide audience anxious to learn more of new territories, peoples, and customs. Cameron's observations are keen and free of bias, still fascinating to read today.

Northern ways of living, methods of coping with natural hazards, and customs designed to promote survival skills are described clearly and in lively fashion, including the appraisal of a Hudson Bay Company applicant's teeth before her accounting or sewing abilities.

Cameron, a journalist and suffragist, writes well of the life of the times, the prospects for development and settlement, and the humour in many of the frontier adventures encountered. A good portrayal of the ancient traditions of the Inuit and Dene, and the extent to which new northerners adapted their ways to survive. Recommended for vivid portrayal of Arctic Canada.
