CIP Grades 6 and up Reviewed by John Mitchell Volume 15 Number 2 1987 March LIONS IN WINTER IS a history of the Montreal Canadiens from the formation of the team to their becoming 1985-86 Stanley Cup champions. Goyens. a sport writer/broadcaster, and Turowetz, a sports sociologist, give an accurate if somewhat one-sided account of one of the most successful sports franchises of all time. Unfortunately, the level of writing is rather uneven. It appears that the two authors took turns writing. The chapters on Jean Beliveau and Guy Lafleur are excellent, while other chapters become bogged down with tedious lists of player transactions. For some unknown reason, one whole chapter is devoted to the Quebec Nordiques. The final chapter is little more than a play-by-play account of the Canadiens' most recent Stanley Cup victory. I found myself longing for more anecdotes and more photographs (there are only eight pages of black-and-white photos). This book will appeal mainly to dyed-in-the-wool Montreal Canadiens supporters.
