Volume 15 Number 2
1987 March

This exuberant recording features many of the songs used in Sharon, Lois and Bram's successful television series, "The Elephant Show." The selections evoke many of the interesting settings used on the program, such as the zoo. Kensington Market, Black Creek Pioneer Village, a picnic, a sleep-over, and so on. Apart from "One Elephant" and "Skin-namarink," which traditionally open and close their performances, the songs are new recordings for the trio. The twenty-four selections include many established pieces such as "Wheels on the Bus," "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," and "Ten in the Bed," as well as less familiar songs. Variety is also provided by the arrangements used: the singers perform not only as a trio, but in other groupings as well, sometimes children sing along, and the instrumentation changes throughout. There is one unaccompanied piece, and several chants. Many songs have choruses or repeated sequences, thus encouraging ready participation. An enclosed folder gives words (but unfortunately no music or chords), a brief note with background information and suggestions for actions and variations, and some coloured photographs of "The Elephant Show" cast.

This spirited production will be enjoyed by most children, especially those who have heard previous recordings by this group or who have seen their television program. Parents and teachers will find fresh material for singing and movement sessions. The Elephant Show Record will join previous Sharon, Lois and Bram recordings as worthwhile additions to the home, school, and public library.
