Each year, as a kind of preview of coming attractions, the editors of Coming Attractions feature the stories of three new writers. Do not wait for the movie: buy this book.

You will be impressed with Dayv James-French, particularly his "Victims of Gravity," in which a young man, still on his honeymoon, makes contact with the lover of his dead friend. Great story. So is Lesley Krueger's "Exiles." I expect that most readers will be able to identify with the protagonist, Alison:

Certainly I am a feminist. Yet I have worked mainly for the causes of exiles. I suppose I felt I belonged with them, in a community of displaced souls. I have always been so out-of-step: overweight in an era of slim women; motherly, but blessed with just one child; a feminist who counted the miles in protest marches as exercise in her beauty magazine diets.

My favourite story, though, is Rohinton Mistry's multi-faceted "The Collectors." Jehangir is shy, slight, and friendless. Dr. Mody, a kindly man, opens up a new world to him, £he world of stamp collecting. Soon eagerness to enlarge his collection leads Jehangir into a compromising situation. Lots of thematic and stylistic fireworks here.

And speaking of enlarging collections: if you have room for just one more good story collection, buy this book. You will be glad you did.
