Alice Hunter is well qualified to compile this book of northern recipes, for she was born in Aklavik, N.W.T., and has spent many years collecting and perfecting ways of cooking food from her native North.

This cookbook is very well put together, with beautiful coloured photographs depicting native culture used as dividers between each section. The index is set up to facilitate finding the recipes under each division. The print is easy to read, the paper of good quality, and each recipe is given in standard and metric measurements. The whole is well bound with an attractive cover and a sturdy spiral spine to allow it to lie flat when open. The size, 8x5 in., makes for easy carrying or storing.

Recipes are divided as follows: "Big Game Meals"; "Small Game Meats"; "Game Birds"; "Fish, Salt and Freshwater"; "Wild Herbs and Greens"; "Wild Fruits and Berries"; and "Breads." The recipes combine traditional dishes with gourmet treats, simplified for easy use in today's kitchens, with suggestions for obtaining country foods and substitutions.

It is in this area, I feel, that the book fails to live up to its title. It is not for the purist who will be looking for recipes that use foods obtained directly from the land with very few, if any, materials bought from the store, even if they do enhance the flavour. In this sense, it leaves one with a let-down feeling. However, as a novelty cookbook, it will add something a little different to your collection.
