Lilly Barnes was born in Russia to a Jewish mother and a German father. At the beginning of the war, the family moved to a small town in Germany. The father was sent to work in the coal mines. The child, aware of a great secret, knew no details until liberation, when her mother told her she was a Jew and that they had lived with false papers during the war years. Her parents did not live together again. The mother's British army lover whisked the eleven-year-old child off to Palestine, where she found a make-do family of children her own age. In Palestine she denied her father's existence, because he was German. Five years later, she was yanked out of Palestine and eventually became a Canadian citizen. There is enough real adventure to make at least three fast-paced, glamorous made-for-film stories, but each story is told with a calmness and serenity that is as rare as it is beautiful.
