Their motive, however, is not to reform Benny, but to enlist his professional aid in saving the Grantham Jewish community from shame. A prominent lawyer has disappeared with all of the money held in trust for clients. In a small city in the Niagara peninsula, this cannot be kept secret for long, nor will it be quickly forgiven or forgotten. Benny begins to look into the situation and the case soon becomes more complicated with the involvement of the Regional Police, the underworld, the arts, and a construction company, as well as some of the city's indigent population. Benny Cooperman has appeared previously in The Suicide Murders,* The Ransom Game,** Murder on Location,*** and Murder Sees the Light (Penguin, 1984). Fans will not be disappointed here, as he remains the same disingenuous, almost bumbling personality who has become so popular. Devotees of the mystery genre will be hard pressed to solve this case before the detective does and the novel should be popular with all of them.
