A typical day in the life and work of the "ranchers" is described, with such activities as watering, saddling, roping, branding, riding, and rustling portrayed in an imaginative style in both text and illustration. The book has the appearance of a picture book for beginning readers, comprised as it is entirely of full-page illustrations with superimposed text. The illustrations, in full colour, are both attractive and humorous, and are complementary to the text. John Bianchi, an illustrator, whose comic looks at rural life have been in Harrowsmith magazine for over eight years, created the characters for the Raccoons cartoon TV show. He was a finalist for the 1986 Canada Council Award for Illustration in Children's Literature. This is his third book. The typeface and the vocabulary make this book more suitable for superior primary readers or slower intermediate readers. The humour and analogies are likely to be missed by very young children.
