Volume 15 Number 1 1987 January Although the author of this book has been living in Canada since 1970, this warm and appreciative reminiscence of her grandmother reflects Khalsa's American roots. The story is set in Queens, New York and California and describes a young girl's relationship with her feisty, Russian-born grandma who helped support her family by playing poker. Grandma is a real character and a storyteller. The twenty-two gorgeous full colour paintings in the book wonderfully depict both the settings of Grandma's life and the stories she tells her young granddaughter. Especially moving is the recounting of Grandma's death and the young girl's reaction to it. Canadian children will have some difficulty in relating to the settings of this story and will require help with such concepts as "balalaika," "Cossacks," and "borscht," but the book can certainly find a place in a unit on multiculturalism or as a stimulus for children's own reminiscences about loved relatives.
