Mary's hauntings must be taken seriously, for she is blessed (cursed, she rather feels) with a kind of second sight, that warns her of the presence or likelihood of danger, but does nothing to protect her from its effects. Bound by a lifelong loyalty to her cousin Duncan, Mary crosses the sea alone to find him, at fearful risk to herself. Upon her arrival, she meets with utterly dismaying news. To tell more would risk damage to the perfect bloom of a gripping story; for just as Mary is haunted by her voices and what she discovers at Hawthorn Bay, so too is the reader.
