These are bound together by a common setting and by some common characters. Six of the stories have been published previously, proving that each can stand on its own. Keewuttunnee, a town along the north shore of Lake Superior and near the Keewuttunnee Indian Reserve, has its doors opened to us. Jake MacDonald writes with insight and with understanding about people whose life-style is different. He takes us into their world and makes us care about them. He seems to be writing about himself when he says, "He'd come here by choice; he'd liked it here. He liked the people..." Each story shows us a little more of what it takes to live in Keewuttunnee. The Bridge Out of Town gives our emotions a work out. We laugh with guide Sonny Copenace when he learns about survival in "The Survivalist." We cry with Constable Chaput when he discovers "one of the nameless kids from town" in "Reuben." We applaud Chopper's graduation in "The Apprentice."
