Veterinarian Bernard Tonken's One of the Family, provides a lighthearted, but thorough approach to canine nutrition. The book includes an outline of the dietary needs of healthy dogs, as well as those of sick, overweight, and working dogs, pregnant and lactating bitches, orphaned newborns and growing pups. Eighty tempting recipes are included, many of which can be enjoyed by dog owners as well as their pets. The doctor points out that "it's ludicrous to throw away our leftovers and go out and buy dog food as a replacement," and he supplies useful guidelines and ideas for using up "people food." As indicated in the title, the book is based on the premise that the dog is truly "one of the family" and emphasis is placed on providing dogs with tasty and varied, as well as nutritionally sound diets.

Tonken's prose is well written and amusing, and is nicely complemented by Don Inman's cartoon illustrations. The text is hand lettered but clear, with recipes complete on one page. Spiral bound, with good quality paper, this dog lover's delight is recommended for adult collections.
