The publisher calls this booklet a "viewbook." He writes: "In designing this project, we were looking for an informative, high quality, affordable northern souvenir." The text and most of the photos are the work of Lyn Hancock, author of There's a Seal in My Sleeping Bag* and other favourite animal stories.

There is a brief history of the land and its people, a vast land that covers the northern half of Canada. Six zones are described: the northern frontier (Yellow-knife and Great Slave and Great Bear Lake areas), Big River (up the Mackenzie River to the Delta), the Western Arctic (Inuvik and scattered Inuit settlements), Keewatin (settlements on the West Coast of Hudson Bay), Baffin (islands of the high Arctic and the big island that is the fifth largest in the world).

Hancock has travelled widely in these zones, and she writes with enthusiasm about the country and the people. Added to this is an ample portfolio of striking colour pictures. These, from the smiling Inuit boy on the cover to the Hay River inukshuk on the back, will appeal to people of all ages. In between, there are pictures of muskox and polar bear, of drum dancing, moose hair tufting, and soapstone carving, and northern people intent on their summer activities.

The pictures have been vividly reproduced on glossy paper throughout. This is a quality viewbook indeed. It will be useful for those planning to visit the Northwest Territories, for it tells how to obtain information about travel and stopping places across the area. It is especially recommended for school libraries. Students of all ages will find that the pictures bring today's people and occupations of the Territories alive for them.
