Volume 15 Number 1
1987 January

These are four units of a series of fourteen, prepared under the auspices of the Canada Studies Foundation. Each is aimed at a particular feature of Canadian life and background. In the units examined, the inquiry method is used to a considerable extent with a variety of materials from which the student draws conclusions. The question presents itself as to whether the materials are "objective or skewed in some manner. From what I have read of these four units the authors have refrained from incorporating the more obvious biases and given a reasonably fair picture of the topics covered.

These booklets share a number of strengths. They are all well illustrated and with a typesetting that lends itself to ease of reading. In addition, the organization of the material is very good, with a variety of exercises and questions appropriate to the text. The content of each unit has been intelligently selected with the unit on "Relations with the United States" having a slight edge for originality.

There are certain features of the material that demand a fairly mature level of knowledge and ability to analyze: what at first glance appears elementary is soon found to be more difficult. The conclusion to be made is that the most appropriate use for these booklets is in secondary school. I recommend them for use at that level. They provide a welcome addition to the limited amount of titles available to promote the emphasis on Canadian studies within social studies curricula.
