Holman Volume 15 Number 1 1987 January Foodworks is a by-product of "Food Show," one of the most successful exhibits held at the Ontario Science Centre. It is the second book to be written by the staff of the Centre. The first, Science-works: An Ontario Science Centre Book of Experiments,* won international acclaim. Foodworks also includes experiments, but it is essentially a book of fascinating information about food. It covers growing, composition, processing, and storage of food from plants and animals. It includes chapters on nutrition, food additives, the digestive system, and even the type of food astronauts eat and the difficulties they experience in keeping their meatballs off the ceiling. Not for the squeamish are the articles on what and how some animals, fish, and birds eat; one on insects as a source of food includes a recipe for preparing a crunchy snack of earth worms. Particularly interesting are the chapters on food legends, food fears, and food mysteries. The latter explains why, in many parts of the world, people do not drink milk. There are other tasty tidbits, such as the fact that the Incas used popcorn for decoration. The thirty-eight activities in the book are made up of simple experiments, recipes, games, and quizzes. Directions and explanations are clear and concise. Factual information, presented in simple and often humorous style, is enhanced by black-and-white cartoon illustrations. Informative, interesting, and fun to read, this book will tickle the palates of budding scientists and home economists and is highly recommended for school and public libraries. Anna L.
