CIP Grades 7 and up Reviewed by Pauline Henaut Volume 15 Number 1 1987 January The author, a tenth-generation Acadian and professor at the University of Moncton, intends this book to be a portrait of contemporary Acadia. In the text, and with the aid of 150 photographs, he presents the history, geography, and way of life of Acadians in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. In the introduction Gallant reminds us that one cannot find Acadia on any modern map. Nevertheless, it is a place of the heart and soul, as he so ably shows us. The volume is a sturdy one. Not all of the photographs are "striking," as the publisher's statement maintains, but many of them are good, and do help to convey the flavour of Acadian life. After viewing 150 black-and-white photographs, one longs for a little colour, but its use would have made the cost of the book prohibitive. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the regional cultures of Canada, and will be a useful source for students involved with Maritime studies. Recommended.
