Parents with children who develop allergies are often bombarded with all kinds of misinformation. "It's in his head." "You can't have a collie dog, but it's all right to have a pet with short hair." "You should move to Arizona."

In 1983, the allergy department of the Hospital for Sick Children published a widely distributed pamphlet called Allergies in Children. The initial volume has been revised and expanded to provide a reliable source of information for concerned parents of young people who suffer from allergic disease.

The book explains what allergies are and how to recognize them. It describes how doctors identify specific allergy problems and details what the parent can expect when given a diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, food allergies, etc. Written in down-to-earth style, the handbook explains just what is happening when a child shows a variety of puzzling symptoms. The medications most commonly prescribed are named and discussed. Most importantly, information on controlling the child's environment to reduce allergic susceptibility is given. And if parents want to learn more about children's allergies, a list of addresses for allergy clinics in major hospitals across Canada is provided.

Allergies and Children is a superb handbook for parents and for young people who want to learn more about their illnesses. It is highly recommended for purchase by high school and public libraries.
