Travel is a complex topic, because people do it in moments of exuberance, such as honeymoons, satisfying cultural cravings, seeing how the other half lives, or even attempting to refire past visions of faded images. Anthony Perkins had his reasons for travel and we are the fortunate recipients of his most intriguing and lively accounts in Traveller's Tales. This book is almost a travel manual, complete with directions and illustrations.

Jenkins is a political cartoonist and his skill is evident on every page of the book. He is also a skilful observer of the human condition. In this book, we go on a long expedition through many of the obvious as well as obscure corners of Asia, Africa, an Australia.

While travelling, the writer kept a diary and included sketches of persons, places, and things. These two features form the basis for this excellent book. There are many revealing anecdotes and vignettes that deliver the grit of travel. More than once, Jenkins put himself at the mercy of the locals and this "help me or I'll die" immediacy comes through very nicely. Reading this book will certainly give any reader the sense of being there. Jenkins has shed more light on life in these exotic places than many a dreary academic diatribe.

I recommend the book for all senior students, and even many juniors would enjoy the drawings, as they add a dimension not found in so many arid geography texts. Not only do we get insightful writing, but we also get superb sketches as a bonus. Anybody planning a trip, or even having returned from these places, will be amused and even educated by Jenkins perceptive efforts.
