This muddled fantasy is the story of Toby, a young whale who sings in his sleep, thus endangering the lives of all the whales in his pod (whale community). Afraid that Toby's song will attract the unwelcome attentions of sharks, killer whales, and worst of all the Iron Beasts that send forth exploding spears, the other whales avoid Toby's company. Alone, he ventures into a mystic region where whales can fly, can see the world entire, and can learn its secrets, then returns able to move even the stony hearts of men with the True Song. One little girl who hears Toby sing encapsulates the message of The Prince of Whales in a few words: "It's so simple. The song is about sharing. We have taken too much and not given enough in return. Listen with your hearts and you will understand." The parallel with the Hans Andersen classic, The Emperor's New Clothes, is inescapable. There is less here than meets the eye.
