This is a delightful book for both cooks and gardeners. The author details information on growing herbs and on cooking with fresh herbs. He groups herbs into those suited to the vegetable garden, the rock garden, and the flower garden. The main part of the book gives growing instructions and recipes for cooking nineteen herbs from basil through mint to thyme. The recipes are clear and take advantage of summer vegetables as well as summer herbs. There are recipes for soups and salads, salad dressings, herb vinegar and butter, and meats and seafood. The author's delight in herbs and their varied flavours is clear in the comments about each dish.

The book is illustrated with fine pen and ink drawings by J. Ward-Harris. It would be useful in schools where there is an emphasis on using fresh materials for cooking and growing vegetables and herbs for home use or commercially.
