Professor Northey has written two previous books prior to this business text intended for students of senior high school level and beyond. A teacher of business communication at the University of Toronto, she wrote the book to help students learn how to write more effective business letters, memos, resumes, reports, and proposals. Believing that, "Business students typically are practical, results-oriented, and attuned more to numbers than to words, the book is deliberately lean - giving them the least they need to know to do the job well." To this reader that seems to have been a bit of a mistake. The book seems too lean.

There are too few examples of each category for my liking. Only two resumes are given as models, both very similar. For such a critical document, students could use other examples of resumes that work. That said, there are good exercises, the book is well organized and easy to read. The brevity of the book will probably appeal to many who would be turned off by the large hardbound competitors in the field. In an age where the skills of communication are becoming increasingly important, books of this genre are bound to do well.
