Cook Volume 14 Number 6 1986 November This book was prepared as a text for use in Canadian high schools. There are five units: "Government in Canada," "Law in Canada," "Our Dual Heritage," "Our Shared Border," "Our Place in the World." Each unit is divided into two chapters and these are further divided into a total of sixty-nine lessons. The first four or five pages of each lesson are used to present the lesson topic. Several visuals are used with the text to help maintain the reader's interest. Each unit is followed by a quiz on "The Facts" and "Your Opinions," which encourages student discussion about the lesson and how the same situation might be approached by society today. The next section, called "New Words," I found to be rather repetitive and boring. However, there is no need to do everything suggested, and for some students the material may be necessary. "An Illustration" concludes the suggested work section of each lesson. Many interesting charts, graphs, and tables have been presented in this area and would appear to be quite useful to the teacher. Finally, each lesson has two other items worth noting. Printed in blue, beside a maple leaf, are trivia about Canada and her people. Each lesson is concluded by a brief, one-page biography of some interesting Canadian. At first, I thought that this was just another history book and I began to skim through it rather quickly. However, I soon became interested in some illustrations that hooked me into reading the text and before I knew it I was avidly reading through the entire book. It is a history text, but one that encourages the reader to do more than just passively read and digest. One soon begins to ponder about some decisions of the past and to compare othem with the ideas of society today. The book is printed in black and white, with blue used to highlight chapters and other interesting bits of information. There is a table of contents, a glossary, a list of credits and sources, and an index. The book has a library binding.
