Nijinsky who lives in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He is sixty-five years old and believes himself to be too old to enjoy life. He has stopped looking after himself, or anyone else. This is the case until, four streets over, Mrs. Johnson's cat has kittens. The outcast of the litter, Charlie, a skinny runt whose black fur sticks straight out, finds his way into Mr. N's home and heart. Mr. N. is appropriately cantankerous and soft hearted by turns. Charlie, despite his bedraggled appearance, shows all the dignity and aloofness befitting a feline. The story reads well aloud, with enough action and suspense to keep listeners interested. It drags on, however, after a predictable, but comfortable outcome, showing us Mr. N. and Charlie living happily ever after. Illustrations are black-and-white drawings with a green wash. They show us Charlie, Mr. N., and the homey interior of Mr. N's house. The book has a standard glued paperback binding with a plain cover design. The title may be hard for some children to read and discourage them from choosing the book. Once in their hands, however, primary children will enjoy the story and it can be read aloud to younger and older audiences.
