In one short, two-day weekend, seven or eight-year-old Ben, visiting without his family for the first time, has to overcome his fear of his aunt, of the dark, of big dogs, of thunderstorms. It seems a heavy load for this slight story without any real plot. Keeping a stiff upper lip in front of a bossy girl neighbor helps. Being in the house where his father grew up helps; Ben learns that his father was once a scared boy, too. Although obviously written for younger children, this book does not really stand beside Stand in the Wind (Harper & Row 1975) or Mine for Keeps (Little, Brown, 1962).
