Adam's new biography of Charles G.D. Roberts purports to fill in the gaps in Elsie Pomeroy's earlier version of his life, gaps left because of her desire to represent him in the best and most discreet public light. So I opened the book expecting to read all sorts of new juicy tidbits about the "father of Canadian poetry." The truth is, that while this biography is a good read, it does not present much to change the impression any fan of the "Old Man" would already have formed. There are more details about his family, his time in Europe, and his love affairs, and a lot of information about Bliss Carman, Theodore Goodridge Roberts, Ernest Thompson Seton, and the publishing problems of Canadian writers earlier in this century. The tone ranges from scholarly formality to gossipy confidentiality, making it fun to read.

The documentation is excellent and the fourteen pages of explanatory notes at the end show the extent of Adam's research. This biography will deservedly become the new basic text on Roberts, and every high school and university librarian should invest in a copy. We might have read much of the information in other books and periodical articles, but this is the first time it has been presented so completely in one volume.
