Pre-School-Grade 2 Reviewed by Pauline Henaut Volume 14 Number 5 1986 September Mary, a little farm girl, desperately wants some of the beautiful red apples she sees in her father's orchard, but the orchard is off-limits now that the calves have been released to feed there. Finally, Mary can no longer resist temptation. She steals into the orchard, takes an apple, and returns to safely, undisturbed by the calves. She repeats the venture, each day becoming braver and bolder. One day, when she lingers to gather up apples for her sister and friends, her luck runs out; she looks up to see a calf charging toward her. The reader, of course, expects a happy ending, and Mary is indeed rescued by her mother. This simple, attractively illustrated story by the author of The Lie* will appeal to young children who will be able to identify with several aspects of the plot and of Mary's character. Parents and teachers will be able to use The Red Apples as a springboard to discussion of various important topics: temptation, obedience, fear, responsibility, and caring for each other.
