The first is a captive pack of five, kept by Jim Wuepper of Michigan and visited by the author. The second is an orphaned brother and sister from the Yukon, whom the author and his wife raised themselves. As in all his books, such as The North Runner (Ballantine, 1980) and The Zoo That Never Was, (Totem, 1984) the author combines careful observation and description wiih comparison and reflection arising from years of research. Where wolves are concerned, Lawrence concludes that their motivation and behaviour are often highly individual, and that human beings can learn a great deal about their own nature through studying these animals. The book reveals throughout Lawrence's great love and respect for his wolves and the natural world to which we and they belong.
