(McClelland and Stewart Signature series) CIP Grades 12 and up Reviewed by Frank Loreto Volume 14 Number 5 1986 September Although Edward Phillip's Buried on Sunday is a well-written novel, which at times shows some sparks of wit and action, it is not a particularly good book overall. Much of the novel's content would make it acceptable in only the most liberal of schools. The narrator, Geoffrey Chadwick, be-grudgingly accepts an invitation to spend a weekend at a cottage in Quebec's Eastern Townships. While there, a trio of escaping bank robbers interrupt an otherwise uneventful day and hold the guests hostage. Although a potentially serious situation, the mood is kept light by the varied reactions on the part of those held captive. Phillips has peopled his novel with a few interesting characters, and it is here that the main strength of the novel lies. Plot-wise, very little happens until the robbers arrive midway through the novel. Up to that point, and beyond, the reader is presented with Chadwick's attempts to reconcile himself to past homosexual love affairs and with the fact that he had his first major affair with the husband of his hostess. Although years have passed since they parted, some embers of passion glow still. Some of the dialogue could cause problems in some schools, as it is quite frank. Also, the descriptions of Chadwick's encounters of the gay kind may not sit well with many school boards. Overall, Buried on Sunday is not a must for school libraries.
