Young Andy Paton, while in grade 6 a few years back at Toronto's Jesse Ketchum school, had to do a project "on any topic" he wished. Using his brother Bill's collection of Sherlock Holmes books, he put together this, now expanded, ABC book. With the help of his brother and the Metropolitan Toronto Library's Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, this slim, but fascinating edition uses quotes and illustrations from the Sherlock Holmes stories to enlighten every alphabet letter. The alphabet letters introduce Sherlockian characters, places, words, and objects as the reader proceeds to "Z." The one-page illustrations facing each page pertaining to the alphabet word are largely from the famous Strand Magazine, where they originally appeared.

Holmes fans will love this, as will those beginning to read about the legendary detective. The reader meets Professor Moriarity, Holmes's pipe and magnifying glass, Watson, Inspector Lestrade, and numerous significant terms used by Holmes. This primer serves to intrigue the novice Baker Street fan and fuel further reading.

Not a necessary purchase for a library but a should-have to accompany those constantly circulating Doyle novels. Highly recommended for school and public libraries as one of those delightful little items that will fascinate even the casual browser.
