Volume 14 Number 4
The five writers who cruised around Montreal high schools, CGEPs, and colleges in the 1970s had a fine time reading their stories to young, captive audiences. No doubt, an interest in contemporary Canadian fiction was sparked by this exposure to real live authors. The post-mortem account of these adventures does not sparkle. As each of the writers, High Hood, John Metcalf, Ray Smith, Raymond Fraser, and finally Clarke Blaise, gives his account, it becomes increasingly tedious. Like an adolescent diary consciously left open to invite perusal, it leads nowhere and is merely self-indulgent. There is even a contribution from Sam Tata, who is responsible for the photographs that embellish the volume. Nine critical essays on the Montreal Story Tellers are included, and a checklist of works by the famous five, compiled by the editor, Professor J.R. (Tim) Struthers of Guelph University, puts an end to an unremarkable collection. There is very little to recommend in this Canada Council assisted publication.
