Kingsley Ward wrote these letters to his son in order to inspire him to go on into business and life itself. Ward senior was anxious that his son adopt some of the same tactics and policies that had worked for him. Such an idea, of course, is thousands of years old. Just why these private letters were published is not so clear.

Ward definitely does have some interesting ideas, and has potential as a writer. That said, the letters frequently sound patronizing and verge on the condescending. The predictability and routineness of the letters make the book best read in small doses. Ward's book is by no means unreadable, but it is not one that would be eagerly read by many of the current generation of high school students.
