Six writers have combined their research to create a very attractive, readable, and informative book describing Vancouver harbour. As people will converge on Vancouver in the summer of 1986, the book is timely for local children and visitors. It is lavishly illustrated with coloured sketches, animated maps, and old photographs.

The style would appeal to pre-teens, as it includes a class of multi-racial children who view the sights, comment, and have small adventures. They and the readers are introduced to the port of Vancouver, the many foreign freighters, pilot boats, container ships, and the fire boat. Useful information is poured out in an acceptable manner. Several pages are devoted to the life of the Salish Indians before the coming of the white settlers and seven pages of old photographs and text show the rapid growth of the port.

There are sections on Granville Market, the Sea Festival, the Fraser River, and the beach; all brightly told and illustrated. Children are left with the present puzzling question of the effect of logging versus fishing on the environment.

Here is a useful and pleasing book for any curious young person. Highly recommended for grades 2 to 7. A teacher's guide, not examined by this reviewer, is also available.
