Charles H. Sternberg was one of the foremost palaeontologists to excavate the dinosaur fossils of the Red Deer River in the Alberta Badlands in the early twentieth century. He pioneered scientific techniques used in fossil excavation and made many important fossil discoveries. This publication, which was originally published in 1917, is an account of his activities in the Alberta badlands circa 1912.

Sternberg is a good story teller and one often gets the sense of excitement of discovery and the feeling of being there at the digs. His account gives some very detailed descriptions of the processes used at the time to find and preserve fossils, as well as some imaginative speculation on the lives of the dinosaurs. The account also includes a three-chapter science fiction/fantasy story; itself a pioneering effort in an unrecognized field.

Although the book is very readable, I doubt that it would attract wide interest in a school library. It is probably best suited for individuals with a specialized interest in palaeontology and I would recommend it only for school libraries that have a call for specialized information in this field. It does contain a lot of information on dinosaurs, but this is available in much more accessible form in many other publications.
