Margaret Urquhart makes both a strong philosophical case for having, and practical suggestions for implementing a new type of guidance service; one that is comprehensive, developmental, proactive, and preventive, rather than individual and reactive to problems only. The program also calls for the co-operation and involvement of all those working with young adolescents: parents, teachers, administrators, guidance counsellors, and most important, the students themselves.

Her book is extremely useful, for both experienced guidance personnel and for those teachers who must do guidance part-time in their classes. It will be especially valuable in Ontario with the OSIS requirements for the whole staff to be responsible for guidance and for twenty hours of guidance in grades 7 and 8. Divided into three major topics, "School Survival Skills," "Self Awareness," and "Interpersonal Relations," the book includes specific lessons on many relevant topics like decision making, study skills, communication, and relating to others. Each lesson includes materials and preparation, lesson procedure, and additional activities. An appendix lists related recommended audiovisual aids.

The book is valuable for teachers, administrators, or parents because of the wide variety and interest in the lessons. Teaching strategies vary from group work to independent study; learning skills vary from listening, viewing, reading, writing, to speaking; student responses vary from oral and written to audiovisual and artistic. This book is recommended for all who work with young adolescents, even youth group leaders; teachers of other subjects like English, theatre arts, and family studies would also find the activities useful. The material could be used right up to the senior grades.
