Distributed by Collins, CIP Grades 4 and up Reviewed by Louise Griffith Volume 14 Number 4 1986 July In Canada Coast to Coast, Grace Deutsch and Avanthia Swan have produced a superb coffee table book of Canada from sea to sea. The book is cloth bound and large format (11 3/4 in. x 10 5/8 in.). In its 512 pages there are brief accounts of the history and geography of each province, followed by full-page coloured photographs of that province. When the book was in my living room while I browsed through it, everyone who came in, including several non-readers, enthused about it and wanted to borrow it. It wfll serve as a wonderful reminder for those who have travelled through any part of Canada, as so many areas from Newfoundland to British Columbia are depicted. It would be especially valuable to those planning a Canadian safari, as they could determine just what parts of Canada they wished to visit. All of the pictures are well taken, including twenty-two from the collection of Parks Canada. There are many, perhaps too many, aerial views along with the winter scenes, sports activities, and some superb nature shots. "Mountain Coat and Kid" is my favourite, although "Snow-shoe Hare and Bald Eagle" give it stiff competition. The photographers must have gone to a fantastic amount of trouble to get their pictures of significant subjects under the best of light conditions. A sampling of superb shots could include Glace Bay Harbour, Peggy's Cove, Truro Park, St. John Market Square, Prince Edward Island, Government House, city-scape in St. John's, Montreal's office towers by day and by night, the Chateau Frontenac, Ontario Place, a Toronto Scottish Highland Band parading in front of the Old City Hall, skiing at Collingwood, Niagara Falls, the Rushing River Rapids near Lake of the Woods, the Port Arthur ski jump, and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In the Manitoba section, the picture of the Legislature at twilight is a winner, supplemented by scenes of lakes, farms, and wildlife. In the western pictures, the mountain scenes are outstanding, as are the rodeo and wildlife shots. There are mountain climbers in both Kootenay National Park and on top of Mount Logan in the Yukon. From the North West Territories there is a wonderful nature picture of a bear with a fish in its mouth. Another beauty is sunset at Pacific Rim National Park. Inevitably, there are some gaps; for example, Hamilton is completely omitted, with nothing of its steel mills, harbour, or Royal Botanical Gardens, while there are three views of the Toronto skyline and sixteen pictures of Ottawa. People are not emphasized, although they do appear, especially in the sport scenes of skiing, boating, and ice canoeing in Quebec. The book deserves wide popularity because of its fine photography and broad view of Canada. It should be purchased by both school and public libraries for its vivid portrayal of the geography of Canada. I expect there will be many returned and prospective travellers who will treasure it for their homes. Congratulations to the authors for a very fine book. Louise Griffith, Agincourt, Ont.
