Volume 14 Number 4 1986 July Prairie Jungle gives us a wide variety of poetry, short stories, and songs by many authors and musicians from Saskatchewan. The book itself is very appealing in format and design. The text and songs are well organized and displayed with easy-to-read typeset. Pen and ink illustrations accompany the stories, songs, and poems, enhancing their appeal. While some of the stories and poems are uneven in quality, overall this versatile collection will be a delight to use with children in almost any setting; school or library programs, for example. Notable among its works include the wonderfully amusing poetry of Lois Simmie; the warm, catchy songs by Connie Kaldor, Geoffrey Ursell, and Heather Bishop; with one beautifully haunting song, "Prairie Wind," by Karen Howe. The short stories vary in length and complexity from quite short, as in Gertrude Storey's "Elephant and the Asthma," to "Fire Mountain" by Ven Begamudre, which would appeal to older readers, This title is recommended to teachers, school, and public librarians.
