(Canadian Families) CIP Grades 2-3 Reviewed by Patricia Fry Volume 14 Number 3 1986 May Treaty Days, which focusses on an Indian family, is part of a new series on Canadian families designed for elementary schools. The first half of the book looks at young Sarah's life in the city. She and her friend Ralph are working on their homework assignment; drawing maps of their school playground. The next day, their teacher plays a surveyor game with the class, a game that helps them "to look at things more carefully than we usually do," The message is there for the young reader. The teacher leaves them with an assignment for the weekend; to discover something they have never noticed before. Sarah and her family spend the weekend at the reserve to celebrate Treaty Day with their extended family and friends. Sarah wears special clothes, as do many of the other Indians. The celebration is followed by a brief description of the Treaty Day ceremony, when those Indians living on the reserve receive money from the government. Sarah remembers her discovery assignment and looks carefully to notice the family smokehouse, where her grandfather preserves fish. Any reader, of course, will by now have discovered much more about the Indian way of life. The book is easy reading, at about early grade two level. Each page features an illustration, alternating between full-colour pictures and sketches in black, red, and white. This book has several uses. First of all, it could be used as an introduction to elementary map-making. Secondly, it has obvious applications for enhancing Indian studies.
