Here is a good, simple dictionary for music students, written in a straight-forward style. Organized alphabetically, the entries attempt to cover the most important aspects of music, including theory, musical terms, instruments, compositions, composers, and performers. It serves as an excellent starting point for young people. Besides the international entries, it has 162 Canadian ones.

Appendix D lists all Canadian entries from Murray Adaskin to George Zuckerman. Appendix E provides a broad bibliography, with references to sources on careers in music, music dictionaries and encyclopedias, opera, theory, history, and musical instruments. One may question the inclusion or the exclusion of the Canadian entries. Mainly classical, the entries have been selected by the editor. Steven Staryk, for example, is included; Angela Hewitt and Jon Parker are not. Some teacher-performers, such as Bruce Mather, are included, winning out, over others perhaps, because of compositions to his credit. An overly brief entry for Glenn Gould contrasts with the rather lengthy one for Healey Willan. This is not to diminish Willan's contribution to Canadian music, but to point out the different emphasis placed on coverage. Of help to reviewers and readers would be mention of criteria used in selection of these Canadian entries. Some typos, "Louis" for "Lois" Marshall in the appendix and the omission of "Sir" with Ernest Macmillan's brief biography, are noted.

The book's large paperback format is attractive with its bold print and easy access. A grade eleven student, when invited to use it, found that it met his expectations. The added dimension of Canadian entries makes this dictionary especially appealing and practical for music students.
