Each of the nine sections is devoted to a different order of mammals and begins with an essay that outlines the physical and behavioural characteristics of its members. Families within that order, and representative species of each, are then described. For a species the description includes a map showing its range, a chart of basic biological information, and frequently a short essay. Beautiful colour photographs appear throughout, illustrating physical features, habitat, and behaviour. Members of several orders often given very brief mention in wildlife books are dealt with quite fully here. Examples are marsupials, insectivores, and rodents. This is a very readable book. At the same time the maps, charts, and pictures make it suitable for quick reference. An excellent glossary and a classified bibliography of further readings, along with a detailed index, are appended. Recommended for schools and libraries.
