Finnigan continues the exploration of valley humour and extends further into our own times. The stories lose nothing in transmission, for they remain true to the hundreds of taped interviews she gathered over a fifteen-year period during her search throughout the valley region. It is all here, the character, the history, the livesof the people, and their humour born of hardship and hard work. She introduces the speakers and lets them get on with their tales, but her rapport with them is clear. The stories roll out one after another without pause, and in the unmistakable accents and rhythms of the Ottawa Valley. This latest book presents stories of Taddy Haggerty of the Opeon-go Line; Father Tom Hunt, who was a lifetime priest in Renfrew County; Phoebe McCord, the political warmer-upper of Shawville; Nellie Funniken; Alphonse Clouthier; and a host of others from the area. Their tales transcend geography and are of general interest for their historical content and entertaining wit. They deal with hunting, fishing, lumbering, farming, and daily life activities of the valley people.
