He has engaged subject specialists in the various fields of sociology to write chapters of the work, his reasoning being that "they would possess the greatest depth of understanding and be abreast of the most recent research in their individual fields." A deliberate effort has been made to include Canadian material and to apply sociological concepts to Canadian society in each chapter. The work is divided into six sections: an introduction that attempts to answer the question "What is sociology?"; a section on society and the individual that includes chapters on culture, socialization, and deviance; an introduction to research methods; chapters on social stratification and ethnic group relations are included in a section on social differentiation; on the social institutions of family, religion, and education are explored; and a section on social organization that includes chapters on formal organizations, social movements, demography and population, and urban sociology. Each chapter is complemented by inserts; excerpts from original research or short adaptions that are set aside from the main body of the text and apply to the subject matter being discussed. In addition, each chapter concludes with a summary of the material, a glossary of terms introduced in that section, a list of additional readings, and a few questions pertaining to the chapter.
