Susan Phillips prepared this booklet subtitled, Instructions and Sample Materials for Organizing a School-Based Career Day, to fulfill the project requirement for the 1983 Shell Canada Merit Fellowship in Career Education. After presenting a rationale for school-based career days, she presents a planning schedule according to the tasks to be done two to three months before career day, six to eight weeks before, a month before, the day before, the day of the event, and the day after. The planning schedule is comprehensive and deals with the organizer's role, the classroom teacher's duties, the speaker's concerns, and the involvement of the students themselves in the day. Master check lists, form letters, and evaluation forms are included.

The discussion regarding which careers to present on a career day could have been covered in more depth. More strategies for determining which careers students are interested in, which are likely to be high demand careers when students graduate, and other relevant careers would have been welcome.

The author uses a chronological planning order for presenting this material. While useful in one way, this results in information concerning particular participants, the speaker, the student, the teacher, being scattered throughout the booklet. Only the table of contents, a lengthy list of the titles of forms, lists, and topics guides the reader. An appendix or outline that would reference the material by participant would have been useful. The booklet is compact and can be read in less than an hour. It would be a definite aid to anyone organizing a career day.
