This compendium of concise, vivid biographies celebrates the lives and achievements of some 150 greater than life size leaders from Canada's past, from early beginnings to Confederation. Developed expressly for children aged nine to fourteen, the collection includes many personalities not found in conventional histories, those from native as well as several multicultural European and Asiatic sources. Hoei Shin, Dekanawida, Hélène Boullé, Noël Levasseur, Ezckiel Hart, and others. More familiar names are often accompanied by well-known illustrations previously appearing in histories for children.

Arrangement is by chronological periods, with glimpses of daily family life among early Canadians, as well as major events that have shaped our nation. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout in full colour and contains a wealth of material that makes it eminently suitable for browsing, for reference, or for read-aloud vignettes at roll call time in a classroom.
