Every Girl: Learning About Menstruation provides the answers to questions posed by grade 7 and 8 girls in Ontario. Its aim, say the authors, "is to provide a clear, factual and sympathetic introduction to menstruation that will answer girls' questions and meet their emotional needs." The authors are certainly qualified. Janice M. Morse, RN, PhD, is a clinical nurse researcher at the University of Alberta Hospital and associate professor of nursing at the University of Alberta. With PhDs in both transcultural nursing and anthropology, she has undertaken research in the areas of nursing, women's issues, and health. Helen McKinnon Doan, PhD., a developmental psychologist at York University, works with teenage girls in her clinical practice. Her areas of research have been child development and learning, parent-child interactions, and adolescence.

The book's question and answer format is an effective way of dealing with the topic. The answers are straightforward, easily understood, and sensitively written. A small sampling of topics covered are: feelings girls have about menstruation, preparing for your first time, the varieties of sanitary products available (accompanied by several black-and-white photos), and menstrual problems.

Any vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to the young reader can be looked up in the glossary provided at the end of the book. Those girls wishing to review a certain area, or who are only interested in a particular aspect, will find the index helpful for this purpose. Recommended for school and public libraries.
