China gives a broad overview of one of the world's largest countries and oldest civilizations. It is made up of two components; a text and a slide-tape presentation. Each may be used independently of the other.

The text is well organized and includes a table of contents. The first sixty-eight pages are divided into twenty-four units covering such diverse topics as "The Land," "History," "Religion," "Rural Life," "Cities," and "Education." The scope of this work necessitates its very general and brief remarks on each topic. The units are easy to read and could be used by either teacher or student as an introduction to a more detailed study. The text also includes a glossary of terms and a short "Suggested Reading List." The suggested activities for each of the twenty-four units invite the student to further research. A script of the slide-tape presentation is also included.

The slide-tape presentation reinforces the material in the text. The visual images are clear and well-matched to the commentary. The background music and the change in narrators throughout the presentation add to the interest and to the mood. Recommended.
