The authors appear to have had the social studies guidelines clearly in their minds as they prepared this book. Designed expressly for classroom use, this three-hole punched book has tear out pages that would best be stored in a binder. There are six major units based on different types of communities across Canada. These communities include Ottawa. Inuvik, Claresholm, and Corner Brook. Each unit has two or three pages of background notes for the teacher and then several student pages. Some of the activities are related to the specific information provided and some are more open-ended, allowing for classroom discussions. Major concepts, purposes, and key ideas of the book are clearly presented. A list of addresses that may be used to gain background notes and a bibliography are also included.

Although the communities, as described, will undoubtedly change with time, the ideas presented are sound and this should prove to be a valuable resource for teachers of the junior to intermediate divisions across Canada.
