He wakes in the morning with exuberance. His mother, seemingly a single parent (a trend noted in recent picture books) says he must go back to bed. Matthew, after making falling-in-holes noises, is told by his mother that he is a turkey and must be quiet. And, no, he cannot make his own breakfast because he is being too silly. All these components come together in a tale of child domination. Matthew digs a real hole in the back yard, he announces to his mother that the midnight turkeys are coming and he will trap them. After taking a lot of child treasures into the hole-trap, Matthew does trap a most lively, jolly bunch of turkeys. The whole-page spread across the centre page is a visual delight. Matthew is the boss. They play cards, they order pizza, they sing songs, and Matthew invites the turkeys in for breakfast. This leads to an orgy of food preparation, spilling, mixing, and zaniness that is every kid's dream. Matthew falls asleep after the turkeys depart. Mother comes into the kitchen and views the mess. "Good heavens!" she cries. "What happened?" Was it real? Or a dream? The children will know. Michael Martchenko's illustrations in full colour emphasize this story's hilarity and mood of celebration.
