Michele Landsberg's Guide to Children's Books will be of greater interest and usefulness to adults relatively unfamiliar with children's literature, such as most parents and classroom teachers, than to children's librarians. It is a discursive listing of some of the well-known critic's personal favourites, with some discussion of various genres: eg., picture books, first novels, humour, "the quest for identity," adventure, fantasy, time travel, growing up or contemporary problem novels, and some pet peeves; books or authors that do not figure in Landsberg's list of "greats." This essay-format portion of the book is followed by an extensively annotated "treasury" of some 350 titles, listed alphabetically by title under suitable age groupings, with a brief bibliography of titles for adults about children's reading.

Landsberg is critical of those lightweight, popular materials much in demand in junior libraries. Her own choices tend to fall into the category of tried and true golden oldies, although some recent titles are included, and there is a healthy representation of the Canadian presence in the children's book world. There is not much here that will be new to the well-informed professional, though it is always a pleasure to share the enthusiasm of a confirmed bibliophile. Probably most useful for librarians to recommend to parents for it will certainly help them to provide a rich collection of excellent titles for children of all ages. Indexed.
