A Dream Becomes Real is one of a series of books written by Susan Atkinson-Keen and illustrated by Nancy W. Patterson. Others in the series are Fun Times, Unexpected Wonders, A Whole Day of Surprises, Lost and Found, and One Thing Leads to Another. In this series, Broughton Bear is a grandfatherly bear who shares a cabin with a bubbly young girl, Toby. He takes care of Toby and teaches her many things about the woods and its plants and animals. For example, in A Dream Becomes Real, Toby meets a deer mouse in the cabin and discovers that the deer mouse eats rose hips from the garden. The next day Toby gathers more rose hips so that Broughton Bear can make a rose hip cake. She also saves the best rose hip for her friend, the deer mouse. I enjoyed this series of nature stories and think they will appeal to pre-school through grade 3 children. In addition to each charming story, there is also some information at the end to tell about the plant or animal named and where in North America it can be found. Recipes are also included in each book for such specialties as Rose Hip Cake, Blueberry Crisp, Mint Lemonade, Cranberry Muffins, and Hot Buttered Cattail Shoots. I asked a grade 1 teacher to share A Dream Becomes Real with her class. It received quite favourable responses regarding the story and the pictures. In fact the next day one boy asked me for the book so he and his mother could make the Rose Hip Cake. The teacher suggested adding a name of a tune to go with Toby's singsong rhyme (eg. Frère Jacques when she searches for her sock). Our only concern was the many ways of pronouncing "Broughton" (as in brow, through, though, rough), although it certainly allows for individual choice. The four-colour illustrations are imaginative, often humorous and supportive for the text. They depict a cosy log cabin tended by Broughton, a kindly moustached bear. This Owl Nature Adventure series provides an invitation for young children to discover nature's surprises. Recommended.Carol Steedman, North Ward E.V.S., Paris, ON. |
